Are your candles eco-friendly? This question is more complex than it first appears. There are many different ways to promote sustainability in candle making, from raw material choice, to ethical practices, to supporting research into future environmentally friendly options. Here, I cover some of the eco-friendly aspects in my own chandlery (the fancy word for candle making!). This is a topic I'm really passionate about, and learn about constantly, so I'll be sure to post more articles around this area of the industry.
Wax: My wax is paraffin wax sourced from South Africa. This wax is used by many professional well-known candle companies, and boasts an impressive skillset to provide a high-quality result. Paraffin wax is produced as a by-product of the crude oil industry, and by using it, you are preventing the raw waste from entering the environment and causing damage. Whilst some may argue that this is not a sustainable source, I feel that by using this by-product you are preventing further damage to the environment from an unfortunate process. The wax producer follows strict ethical procedures, whilst many other producers employ unethical labour and practices. This particular brand are also working on the future of waxes, by producing highly effective paraffin waxes which are not produced as a by-product of the crude oil industry and are not reliant on unethical farming or labour. By choosing this wax, Nostos Candles is helping to support the development of ethical waxes in the future. This particular paraffin blend has been assessed thoroughly and has been found to be undamaging to human health, is sulphur-free, vegan, cruelty-free, non-toxic, and is purified using environmentally friendly technologies. Our wax is also odourless and non-corrosive. In summary, Nostos Candles are made from a wax which avoids unethical labour and practices, promotes the development of a sustainable future for chandlery, has been strenuously tested for human health, and provides a luxury, high-end product.
Fragrance: Our fragrances come from a variety of suppliers, and they are all vegan and cruelty-free. Many of our fragrances are also paraben-free, silicon-free, PEG-free, CMR-free and phthalate-free. We are also readily available to provide a full list of allergens for every fragrance on request. We do not use essential oils, which can be unstable and could potentially be negative to the health to wildlife and pets. You can find more information on which candles meet the above criteria on each individual candle listing, please get in touch if you have any further questions.
Containers: Currently, our candles come in metal tins. These are recyclable, however we highly encourage you to reuse them! One of the reasons we have chosen these tins is that they are very easy to clean and reuse. You can remove the remaining wax by carefully heating it with a hairdryer until it has melted (the tin will get hot, so please wear protective gloves such as an oven glove, or keep on a heat-resistant surface). Ensure that you hold the hairdryer high up from the candle to avoid hot wax spattering. Wear eye covering if possible. Once melted, you can wipe around the tin with kitchen roll thoroughly to remove all traces of the wax. You can then wash in warm soapy water. Wicks: Our wicks are made from cotton and are lead-free. Historically, some wicks have contained leads, but our wicks are totally lead-free and safe. Anything Else?: At Nostos Candles, we like to keep things pristine and perfect, and avoid the use of any additional pieces in our candles. We do not use any additional chemical ingredients, or use no artificial dyes in our tin candles. Our tin candles are simply the natural colour of the oil and wax, which can mean some variation in colour, though no artificial colouring is used.
